How to... Protect Yourself from Sexual Harassment

It's difficult to determine WHEN or HOW one is going to be sexually harassed. However, by acknowledging a few simple things, its possible to prevent oneself from being placed in a compromising position.

1) DRESS APPROPRIATELY - Many will say that one's clothing should not dictate whether it's acceptable to touch another human being. But in the workplace, all attire should be kept professional. Depending upon the climate, type of job, and working atmosphere, this can mean any number of things. However, by keeping clothing from being provocative, you can possibly avoid making others uncomfortable at work.

2) SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY - Be certain to avoid joke territory that crosses intimate lines. Do not make innuendos which would cause someone to feel "invited" into your personal space.

3) SPEAK UP WHEN NECESSARY - If you feel that someone has violated your person in any way, say something. The offender may be unaware that closing in on your "territorial bubble" is indeed intolerable to you. Increase the space between you. And if that doesn't work, politely ask the person to give you a little breathing room. If someone's jokes or comments cross the line, say so. Tell the person simply that you don't find the banter amusing.
