You MUST judge your new partner as a whole person, not in contrast to your ex. After breaking up, we tend to feel the sting of our ex's negative attributes more strongly than ever, and there's the temptation to look for the absence or opposite of those attributes in a new partner. That's fine, since learning from past relationships is a healthy thing, but it's also possible that in seeking your ex's opposite, you forget about your ex's positive attributes and overlook their absence in your new partner, because you're so excited the "He won't be jealous like my ex was" or "She won't be needy like my ex was" and so on.
In deciding whether to pursue a rebound relationship, focus on the positives of your past relationship(s) as well as the negatives. Learn from both. It may be more difficult to dwell on the positives because it might make you feel nostalgic, but those are the things you'll miss once the excitement of the rebound effect has passed. - If it was clear your prospective reboundee was really into you long before you broke up, consider the possibility that s/he is only attracted to people who are emotionally unavailable (and thus will lose interest in you once you fall in love with him/her). S/he probably also has no regard for other people's feelings (namely your ex's) if s/he was hitting on you while you were involved with someone else. Would you really want to invest in a relationship with someone who overtly pursues relationships with men or women involved in committed relationships? If you don't think it would work out in the long-run, don't waste your time just because you feel lonely and someone is obviously interested.

Use the time you have by yourself to take personal responsibility for your part in the dissolution of your past relationship, and work toward developing qualities and skills that will help you to be a better partner. Whether you tell your reboundee about your self-improvement efforts, or simply show him/her through your words and actions, s/he is likely to conclude that you are someone who is willing to put in the work that is necessary for sustaining a long-term relationship. This will go a long ways toward alleviating his/her fears about getting involved with someone who recently experienced a breakup or divorce.

- If your ex only became interested in you again when you started your rebound relationship, keep in mind that s/he is probably initiating contact for the sole purpose of sabotaging your relationship due to petty jealousy. Your ex will probably play hard to get, or lose interest altogether, if you allow your lack of boundaries with your ex to drive your reboundee away. Any ex that engages in this kind of behavior is selfish and inconsiderate of other people's feelings.
- Remember, your affections never need to be realized in order for your crush to help you regain your excitement about the future and hope for lasting love. One crush will help carry you to the next. Each day the painful emotions associated with your breakup will subside a little more, and you will no longer have to worry so about being as cautious as you would, were you recently coming out of a breakup.

- Rebound relationships are risky. Expect them to take a lot more work than a non-rebound relationships, and to end up with disastrous repercussions if you are not careful.
- To avoid ruining a good friendship, or ruining your chances of sharing a long term relationship with someone you have been friends with a long time, see if you can talk them into spending a lot of time with you, as a friend still, but with the idea of exploring whether you might be compatible romantically. This will give you time to get over your breakup and make decisions with a clear head.
- If you can't let go of your ex emotionally with the passage of time, make a clean break from him/her, or maintain clear boundaries with an ex that both you and your reboundee feel comfortable with, you are probably emotionally torturing your reboundee. If couples and individual counseling doesn't help you work through your ambivalence and learn how to maintain clear boundaries with ex's, get back with your ex, or move on with your life as a single person until you are ready to treat someone like they are worth more to you than sloppy seconds.
- If your ex is engaging in "friendly" stalking-like behaviors (e.g., leaving little gifts, telling you "I just happened to be in the area and thought I'd stop by," etc.), you need to firmly tell your ex you would like a clean break, even if your ex is devastated as a result. Eventually, you will have to choose between your ex and your reboundee, and by the time you feel ready to make that choice, it might be too late and you will have lost your reboundee, or both your ex and reboundee, so make a choice now.
