Do's and Don’ts... Men's Accessories

Do wear the right socks.
Keep those thick white tube socks in the gym bag where they belong. When it comes to dress pants and shoes, stick with a thin material, subtle patterns, and neutral colors, such as black, gray, brown, or beige.

Don’t mistake a pocket square for a handkerchief.
The main difference is that pocket squares are decorative, and handkerchiefs are functional. Pocket squares are usually constructed from silk and should be placed in the front breast pocket of a sport coat or suit jacket. Handkerchiefs are usually cotton and should be kept out of sight in an inside jacket pocket or a pants pocket.

Do match your belt to your shoes.
If you’re wearing brown shoes, wear a brown belt. If you’re wearing black shoes, wear a black belt. They don’t need to match exactly, but do try to stay in the same color scheme.

Do match your socks to your slacks.
Instead of matching your socks to your shoes, you should match your socks to your slacks, which extends the visual line of your leg. For example, if you’re wearing tan dress pants with black shoes, opt for tan or beige dress socks instead of black ones.

Don’t wear a belt and suspenders at the same time.
They’re designed for the same purpose—to keep your pants from falling down. One renders the other redundant.

Do wear cuff links with a French cuff dress shirt.
French cuff dress shirts have two holes in each cuff and are specifically designed for wear with cuff links to hold the cuff together. Refrain from poking an extra hole in a regular dress shirt just to show off those shiny new cuff links.

Don’t wear a belt buckle that’s too big.
As a general rule of thumb, stick with a belt buckle that’s smaller than a deck of cards.

Do keep jewelry simple.
Whether we’re talking about watches, chains, cuff links, or tie bars, remember to keep your jewelry simple. Accessories should complement your outfit, not overpower it.

Do apply cologne with a light touch.
They should be able to see you before they can smell you. Don’t spritz more than three times and make sure to hit either side of the throat (under each ear) and on your chest (under your clothing).

Do wear a belt with slacks.
Unless your slacks don’t feature belt loops, you should always wear a nice dress belt with a pair of slacks. Simply match the color to your shoes.

Do streamline your wallet.
A fat wallet can ruin the look of a nice pair of slacks, and even cause fabric damage down the road. Periodically, purge your wallet of any miscellaneous cards and receipts, and opt for a slim-profile style.
